Charles Addams started drawing a peculiar household as single-panel cartoons for The New Yorker in 1938, and for twenty-six years none of them had names. The family only became Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, Lurch, Grandmama and Thing when ABC commissioned a sitcom in 1964 and asked Addams to label his own creations. That order of events explains a lot about why the characters work. They were designed as visual jokes first, each one a complete idea in a single image, which is why they translate so cleanly into distinct personality types.
The joke has always been that the Addamses are not monsters pretending to be a family. They are a functional, affectionate, unusually well-adjusted family whose tastes happen to run to graveyards and explosives. Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 film understood this, and Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia played Morticia and Gomez as one of the few genuinely passionate marriages in American comedy. Netflix’s Wednesday, launched in 2022 with Jenna Ortega in the role, pushed the same idea further by dropping the family’s most unsentimental member into a school full of people who need constant emotional reassurance.
The results here separate along temperament rather than taste for the macabre. Morticia is serene, deliberate, and completely unbothered by other people’s discomfort, the sort who tends roses carefully and then snips off every bloom because the stems are the beautiful part. Gomez is her opposite in energy and her equal in devotion: reckless, delighted by everything, prone to fencing in the drawing room and crashing model trains for entertainment. Wednesday is the deadpan analyst, the one who says the unsettling true thing at dinner and watches the reaction with mild scientific interest. Pugsley is the willing participant, cheerfully volunteering as the target for whatever his sister has built, which requires a kind of trust most siblings never manage.
Around them the household widens. Uncle Fester is pure enthusiasm without a sense of danger, a man who lights a bulb in his mouth for fun and treats every scheme as worth trying once. Lurch communicates in a groan and a raised eyebrow and turns out to be the steadiest presence in the house. Grandmama handles the potions and the fortune telling and enjoys a family argument more than is strictly polite. Cousin Itt arrives entirely covered in hair, speaks in a rapid chatter nobody translates, and is somehow the most socially successful member of the family. Thing is a disembodied hand who does more useful work in a day than most people manage in a week.
