For most of its run, the only home the Winchester brothers had was a 1967 Chevrolet Impala with a trunk full of rock salt, machetes, and holy water. Motel rooms changed every episode, allies died, the mythology reorganized itself every few years, and the car stayed. Supernatural premiered in September 2005 and ended in November 2020 after fifteen seasons and 327 episodes, which makes it the longest-running American live-action fantasy series ever produced. Very little of that longevity came from plot. It came from two brothers arguing in a car about whether saving each other justifies the damage they cause doing it.
The setup is grim and simple. Their mother is killed by a demon in 1983 when Sam is six months old, their father raises them as hunters instead of children, and both men spend adulthood dealing with what that did to them in opposite ways. Sam keeps trying to leave for a normal life and keeps being pulled back. Dean never tries, because he decided as a child that his job was looking after his brother, and he has no identity prepared for the day that stops being necessary.
Sorting into the humans, angels, demons, or the one deity who shows up in this cast comes down to duty, temptation, and how far a person goes for the people they are responsible for.
The results cover a wide moral range on purpose. Dean Winchester is defined by protectiveness that shades into control, a person who would rather carry a burden badly than hand any part of it to someone else. Sam is the researcher and the doubter, more willing to consider that the rules might be wrong and more likely to make a catastrophic decision by reasoning his way into it. Castiel arrives as an angel who follows orders and gradually becomes the most sincerely well-intentioned character in the series, along with one of the most consistently wrong, since almost every disaster he causes starts with a decision to spare someone else the cost. Crowley plays Hell like a business, closing deals with the polished irritation of a middle manager, and his loyalty is available for purchase right up until it briefly is not. Bobby Singer runs a salvage yard and functions as the father the brothers should have had, offering blunt affection and a research library in roughly equal measure.
Rowena MacLeod, Meg Masters, Ruby, Lilith, Azazel, the archangel Gabriel, Lucifer, John Winchester, and Chuck Shurley fill out the list, which means the sorting can distinguish the reluctant hero from the loyal soldier from the operator who always keeps an exit available.
Answer as yourself on a normal day rather than as your favorite character in a crisis. The useful split in this cast is between people who protect and people who investigate, and both of those keep getting each other into trouble across fifteen seasons.
