Every episode of Bob’s Burgers opens with the same three jokes in the same three places. The chalkboard behind the counter carries a new Burger of the Day pun, the storefront next door has changed into a different absurd business, and a differently named pest control van is parked outside. None of it advances a plot. It is a signal about what kind of show this is, one that runs on accumulated detail and affection rather than on setups and punchlines. The premise is thin on purpose. Bob Belcher runs a struggling burger restaurant with his wife and three children, the rent is always a problem, and the rival pizza place across the street is doing better than he is. What makes it work is that the Belchers like each other. There is no contemptuous marriage, no idiot father being managed by a long-suffering wife, and no child who is embarrassed to be seen with their parents. The show finds its comedy in enthusiasm instead, usually somebody’s deeply specific obsession colliding with reality.

Louise Belcher, nine years old and never seen without her pink bunny ears, is a schemer with a talent for manipulation and a sentimental streak she would deny under oath. Tina is thirteen and moves through the world at the pace of her own monotone, writing erotic friend fiction, thinking about horses and zombies, and demonstrating more moral courage than anyone else in the family when it counts. Gene is loud, musical, and completely unembarrassed, which makes him the only Belcher with no anxiety to speak of. Bob himself is the quiet perfectionist, a man who cares far more about food than his customer count justifies and who talks to his ingredients when nobody is listening. Linda meets every situation with volume and a song, and her optimism is a deliberate strategy rather than a lack of awareness.
