New Orleans functions less as a setting in The Originals than as a contested estate. Klaus Mikaelson helped build the city in the eighteenth century, was driven out of it by the father who spent a millennium hunting him, and returns a hundred years later to find the French Quarter run by Marcel Gerard, the boy he once took in and turned into a vampire. The territory is carved up between vampires who answer to Marcel, werewolves pushed out into the bayou and witches whose magic Marcel polices through a captive teenage prodigy named Davina Claire, and the opening season is essentially a slow campaign by one immortal to take a city back from another while insisting to everyone, including himself, that he came for other reasons.

Julie Plec built the show around a character who was never meant to survive his arc. Klaus arrived midway through the second season of The Vampire Diaries as a temporary antagonist, an original hybrid to be defeated and written out, and Joseph Morgan’s performance made him too valuable to discard, which is how a villain from a teen supernatural drama ended up anchoring a series of his own on The CW in October 2013, launched through a backdoor pilot that aired as an episode of the parent show that April. Plec described the spin-off from the start as a darker register than The Vampire Diaries, closer to a family crime saga about succession, debt and grudges than to a high school romance, and Michael Narducci, who ran the writers’ room through its middle seasons, pushed harder in that direction with faction politics, ancestral witch magic and a body count that included Mikaelsons.

The family is a thousand years old and the series never stops reaching back into it. Esther, a witch, turned her children into the first vampires in a Viking-era settlement in what would later become Mystic Falls, after one of her sons was killed by werewolves, and Mikael then spent centuries pursuing them, with particular attention to Klaus, whose real father was a werewolf rather than him. Elijah, played by Daniel Gillies, keeps the family bound by the vow of always and forever; Rebekah, played by Claire Holt, keeps attempting to leave it; Kol and Finn spend long stretches daggered in coffins because Klaus prefers his siblings portable; and Freya, an older sister handed to their aunt Dahlia before the others were born, reappears alive after a thousand years of magical sleep. The birth of Hope, Klaus and Hayley’s daughter and the first vampire, werewolf and witch tribrid, eventually rearranged the entire premise and carried the mythology into Legacies once the fifth and final season ended in August 2018.

Five seasons feed into the list, weighted toward specifics rather than general impressions: which sibling is nominally the eldest, what Marcel was to Klaus before he came to rule the Quarter, how the harvest ritual worked and what it cost the witches who agreed to it, the name of the blade that leaves a vampire in permanent agony, what the Hollow wanted from Hope, and how the Mikaelsons finally handled an inherited curse that no daggering could contain.

Sorting the Mikaelson timeline separates attentive viewers from casual ones fairly quickly. Anything missed can be measured against the marked answers printed below.
