Thirty-four years after The Karate Kid, somebody finally asked what happened to the blond bully who lost the tournament. Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube Red on 2 May 2018, created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, and its central move was to retell the 1984 film from Johnny Lawrence’s side. William Zabka and Ralph Macchio both returned, along with Martin Kove as John Kreese and, later, Yuji Okumoto as Chozen Toguchi from the 1986 sequel. The series moved to Netflix in 2020 and ran through six seasons, and it worked because it took a thirty-year-old grudge seriously instead of treating it as a joke.
Johnny is the reason the premise holds. He is a broke, blunt, out-of-time man who reopens a dojo mostly to have something to do, and he turns out to be a better teacher than anyone expected, largely because he says things nobody else will. Daniel LaRusso is the mirror image: successful, respected, and completely unable to admit that he was ever anything other than the wronged party. His Miyagi-Do approach preaches balance while he escalates a rivalry from the safety of a car dealership.
The students carry the sharper transformations. Miguel Diaz is Johnny’s first pupil, an outsider who gains confidence and then has to work out what to do with it when confidence turns into something harder. Eli Moskowitz begins as a boy so self-conscious about a scar that he barely speaks, then reinvents himself as Hawk with a mohawk and a cruelty he borrowed wholesale from his teachers, which makes him the clearest illustration of what the show thinks these dojos do to the kids inside them. Tory Nichols fights out of genuine necessity, caring for a sick mother and holding down jobs, and her aggression reads as survival rather than posturing. Robby Keene is Johnny’s abandoned son, who ends up training under Daniel largely to hurt his father, and spends the series looking for somewhere to belong.
The later additions widen the field. Devon Lee is the overachiever, driven by academic-style ambition applied to a physical discipline she is not naturally suited to. Zara Malik and Axel Kovacevic arrive with the Iron Dragons, polished and professional, representing a version of competitive karate with no personal history in it at all. Kreese remains the darkest result, a man who genuinely believes mercy is a weakness and has the biography to explain why. Chozen begins as a former enemy and becomes the most disciplined and steady presence on the Miyagi-Do side.
