Most long-running shonen series organize themselves around a school, a tournament or a war. Fairy Tail organizes itself around a workplace. Hiro Mashima began the manga in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2006 and ran it for eleven years and sixty-three volumes, and the premise stayed simple throughout: in the kingdom of Fiore, magic is a licensed trade, wizards belong to guilds, and jobs go up on a request board for whoever wants them. The Fairy Tail guild in Magnolia is the loudest and least disciplined of them, notorious for completing assignments and destroying more property than the reward covers.
That setup produces a cast defined by how each member behaves inside a group they cannot be thrown out of. Natsu Dragneel is a fire dragon slayer raised by an actual dragon named Igneel, reckless, loud, immune to intimidation, and completely incapacitated by any form of transport, which is one of the better running jokes in the series. Erza Scarlet is his opposite in method and equal in force, a swordswoman who swaps armor mid-fight through requip magic, enforces discipline nobody else will, and has a weakness for strawberry cake that the guild treats as a security concern. Lucy Heartfilia joins in the first chapter as a celestial spirit mage who summons her allies through zodiac keys, and she is the most ordinary person in the room, an aspiring novelist who keeps track of rent and consequences while everybody around her ignores both.
Gray Fullbuster works in ice, trained by a master who sacrificed herself, and strips his clothes off without noticing he is doing it. Gajeel Redfox arrives as an enemy from a rival guild and stays as a member, blunt and unapologetic about his past. Laxus Dreyar, the guild master’s grandson, spends his early arcs believing strength entitles him to command and has to be beaten out of it. Juvia Lockser converts a lifetime of rain and isolation into total devotion to Gray. Wendy Marvell is the youngest dragon slayer, a healer whose magic supports other people rather than hurting anyone. Happy and Carla are Exceeds, talking winged cats, one an enthusiastic sidekick and the other severe and precognitive.
The darker results sit at the edges of the story. Zeref is an immortal black wizard cursed so that anything he loves dies, Mavis Vermillion is the guild’s first master, small, brilliant and long dead, Jellal Fernandes spends the series trying to repay a very large debt, Acnologia is the dragon that ends things, and Faris rounds out the list.
The questions are built around loyalty, temper, responsibility and how you act when a group you belong to is threatened, since those are the axes the series itself tests its characters on. Nobody is asked to name an arc or a spell.
