Panem runs on an arithmetic of punishment. Thirteen districts rebelled against the Capitol, one was apparently erased as a demonstration, and the twelve that remain are required to send two children each into an arena every year so that the descendants of the losing side can watch the price of rebellion restaged as televised entertainment. District 12 sits at the bottom of that arrangement, a coal town where the mines kill fathers, the Peacekeepers can be bribed with squirrel meat, and a sixteen-year-old poaching beyond the fence with a bow her father made is technically committing a capital offence every morning before breakfast. That is the world Katniss Everdeen inhabits before her younger sister’s name is drawn from thousands of slips at the reaping.
Suzanne Collins published the first novel in September 2008, and the numbers stitched through it do most of the structural work. Twenty-four tributes enter the seventy-fourth Hunger Games and exactly one is supposed to leave. District 12 has produced two victors in seventy-three previous years, only one of whom is still alive, Haymitch Abernathy, who won the fiftieth Games in a Quarter Quell that doubled the field to forty-eight children. Tesserae let a starving family trade extra grain for extra entries, which is why Gale Hawthorne’s name sits in the reaping bowl dozens of times while a merchant’s child might appear five. The trilogy finished in 2010, sold well past a hundred million copies, produced four films between 2012 and 2015 that took close to three billion dollars worldwide, and then reopened with two prequels, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020, which follows a young Coriolanus Snow through the tenth Games, and Sunrise on the Reaping in 2025, which returns to Haymitch and the fiftieth.
The books left marks well outside publishing. The three-finger salute that District 12 gives Katniss in silence at the reaping was adopted by protesters in Thailand after the 2014 coup, used openly enough that soldiers detained people for making the gesture in public, and it resurfaced during demonstrations in Myanmar in 2021, which is an unusual afterlife for a hand signal invented for a young adult novel. The commercial success also reshaped a genre, since the studios and publishers that followed spent the next several years chasing dystopian franchises about tested teenagers, and Jennifer Lawrence went from a little-known Oscar nominee to one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood between the first film and the last.
The questions here cover the trilogy and the films together, and they favour detail over atmosphere: the number Effie Trinket reads out at the reaping, the token Madge gives Katniss before she leaves, what Peeta’s family does for a living, what nightlock is and why it ends the seventy-fourth Games with two victors rather than none, which arena feature marks the hours of the Quell, and what District 13 turns out to have been doing underground for seventy-five years. Several questions rest on names that appear briefly and matter enormously, including Cinna, Rue, Finnick Odair and President Coin.
Readers who paid attention to the political mechanics tend to outscore those who remember only the arena. The completed key sits further down the page, marking exactly where the trilogy slipped out of reach.
