A loud, orphaned kid nobody in his village wanted anything to do with grows up to become its most respected leader: that’s the entire emotional throughline of Naruto, and it’s exactly why the series became one of the most influential anime and manga franchises ever made. Masashi Kishimoto’s story ran for fifteen years across Naruto and its sequel Naruto Shippuden, following Naruto Uzumaki from an ostracized academy student to a ninja capable of ending wars, and it did so while building one of the most sprawling casts and richest world histories in modern shonen storytelling.

Seven hundred chapters ran in Weekly Shonen Jump between 1999 and 2014, collected into seventy-two volumes that have sold well past 250 million copies worldwide, and the two anime runs together account for more than seven hundred episodes. That length matters, because Kishimoto used it to bury information. The reason the Hidden Leaf treats a small boy as a threat is that the Nine-Tailed Fox was sealed inside him on the night of his birth by the Fourth Hokage, who was also his father, a fact withheld from Naruto and from readers for years. Itachi Uchiha spends the better part of the series as a straightforward fratricide before the truth about who ordered the clan’s destruction reframes every scene he appeared in.

The world itself is organized with more precision than the fights suggest. Five great villages, Konohagakure, Sunagakure, Kirigakure, Iwagakure and Kumogakure, each answer to a Kage, and beneath that sits a ranking system running from academy student through genin, chunin and jonin, with promotion decided by the Chunin Exams rather than by raw strength. Nine tailed beasts are distributed among those villages as deterrents, which is what makes the Akatsuki’s collection campaign an act of war rather than a series of robberies, and what eventually pulls every surviving character into the Fourth Great Ninja War. Even the Leaf’s founding, a pact between Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha that collapsed into a duel at the Valley of the End, echoes forward into Naruto and Sasuke standing in the same spot generations later.
