Yoshihiro Togashi began serializing Hunter x Hunter in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 1998, and the manga has become nearly as famous for its hiatuses as for its content, with chronic back pain repeatedly halting publication for years at a stretch. What comes back each time is a story that treats its own genre with unusual suspicion. Gon Freecss sets out to find the father who abandoned him, and the series steadily complicates the idea that this is a healthy goal, or that Ging is worth finding, or that Gon’s cheerfulness is the harmless thing it looks like.
The reason this cast sorts so well into personality types is Nen, the power system Togashi built around character rather than strength. Every ability is shaped by the user’s temperament and often by a self-imposed restriction that makes it stronger. Kurapika’s chains only reach full power against the Phantom Troupe, and he binds himself to that limit knowing it could kill him. Hisoka’s Bungee Gum works because he treats combat as foreplay and cannot resist letting a promising opponent grow stronger before finishing them. A person’s abilities in this world are a readout of what they want most, which is exactly what a personality quiz tries to find.
The results span a wide range of temperaments. Gon is direct to the point of recklessness, incapable of deception, and frightening precisely because his kindness and his rage come from the same uncomplicated place. Killua Zoldyck was raised by a family of assassins and trained to be electrocuted until it stopped hurting, and he spends the series learning that friendship is not a tactical weakness. Kurapika is the survivor of a massacre, driven by a grief he has converted into method, calm on the surface and burning underneath. Leorio wants money out loud and wants to be a doctor for people who cannot pay, and he is the only one who reliably says the obvious human thing nobody else will.
Further out, Hisoka is pure appetite dressed as a magician. Chrollo Lucilfer leads the Phantom Troupe with a stillness that makes him harder to read than any of his followers, stealing abilities the way other people collect books. Illumi Zoldyck manipulates his own brother with needles and considers it care. Isaac Netero, chairman of the Hunter Association, spent years praying tens of thousands of times a day until the gesture became a weapon. Ging Freecss is charming, brilliant, and completely uninterested in being anyone’s father. Zazan, Welfin, and Meleoron come out of the Chimera Ant arc and represent three different answers to the same question about whether a creature born to serve can choose otherwise.
The questions here deal with ambition, loyalty, how you treat an opponent who is losing, and what you would sacrifice for something you want badly. Answer with the version of yourself that shows up under pressure, since that is the version Nen would read.
