Dragon Ball Z begins five years after the end of Dragon Ball with a settled domestic scene: Goku is a married father taking his small son to visit old friends at Kame House. It lasts about ten minutes. An armoured stranger lands, identifies himself as Goku’s brother, explains that the boy raised in the mountains was sent to Earth as an infant to clear it of inhabitants, and abducts Gohan to force the issue. Toei’s adaptation of that arc premiered in April 1989 and ran until January 1996 across 291 episodes, which is where most of the world first encountered a story that had begun as a comedy about a search for seven wish-granting orbs and had quietly turned into a saga about a genocidal species and the last decent member of it.

The series looks like an escalation ladder with one man on top, and that impression does not survive a careful rewatch. Goku spends an extraordinary amount of the run absent: dead for most of the Saiyan aftermath, in a healing chamber on Namek while others hold the line, spending seven years in the afterlife across the Buu era, and repeatedly arriving after the decisive damage has been done. The kill on Cell belongs to Gohan, not to him. The blow that makes the Buu conflict winnable is Vegeta’s self-destruction, an act of a former villain who spent the Namek arc trying to murder everyone he later dies for. The Spirit Bomb that ends the story only gathers enough energy because Mr. Satan, a fraud who won a tournament by accident and took credit for saving the world twice, shouts at a planet that trusts him more than it trusts Goku. The structure keeps handing the last move to somebody other than its own protagonist.

Two scenes carry most of the emotional weight of the whole run. On Namek, Vegeta dies weeping in front of the man he tried to kill, asking Goku to avenge a race that Vegeta himself had helped Frieza destroy, and it is the first moment in the franchise where the villain’s arithmetic collapses in public. At the Cell Games, Android 16, a machine built to kill Goku who ends the arc asking a child to protect the birds and the wind, has his head crushed underfoot, and Gohan’s restraint gives out in a transformation that Toei stretched across minutes of held frames and cracking ground. Neither moment is about a power level, though a mistranslation in the early English dub, where a reading of eight thousand became over nine thousand, went on to outlive nearly every line the series wrote.
