Assassin’s Creed Trivia Quiz: Can You Pass It?

What started as a stealth-focused historical adventure about a single hooded assassin infiltrating the Third Crusade eventually grew into one of gaming’s largest and longest-running franchises, spanning dozens of games set across nearly every major historical period imaginable. Assassin’s Creed built its identity around a centuries-long conflict between two secret societies, the Assassins and the Templars, fighting a hidden war across history over whether humanity deserves free will or needs to be controlled for its own good.

“Nothing is true, everything is permitted” is not something Ubisoft invented. The line is traditionally attributed to Hassan-i Sabbah, who took the fortress of Alamut in northern Persia around 1090 and led the Nizari Ismailis that European chroniclers later called the Hashashin, and it reached modern readers largely through Vladimir Bartol’s 1938 novel Alamut. The first game hands it to Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad in 1191, moving him between Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus while Richard the Lionheart campaigns nearby, and the game charges a real price for the hidden blade: the ring finger of the hand that carries it.

Wrapped around that is Desmond Miles, a bartender abducted by Abstergo Industries and strapped into the Animus, a machine that reads memories encoded in his ancestors’ DNA. Abstergo is the Templar order in corporate form, and what it wants out of his bloodline are the Pieces of Eden, artifacts left by a precursor species that predates humanity and built devices capable of overriding free will outright. That framing lets the series relocate to any century it likes while keeping one continuous plot running underneath, and it also explains the glitches, loading grids and desynchronisation messages the games treat as diegetic.

The second game moves to Florence in 1476, where Ezio Auditore watches his father and brothers hanged after the family is framed, then spends three games working outward from that. Leonardo da Vinci repairs the hidden blade and decodes the pages of Altaïr’s codex; the Pazzi conspiracy of 1478 and the murder of Giuliano de’ Medici in the Duomo become playable; Rodrigo Borgia turns out to be the man behind it. Brotherhood carries him to Rome, and Revelations ends in Constantinople in 1511, where an older Ezio hunts the keys to Altaïr’s sealed library.

Later protagonists spread the map considerably. Connor fights through the American Revolution, Edward Kenway sails the Caribbean around 1715 alongside a version of Blackbeard, Arno moves through the Terror in Paris in a game remembered nearly as much for its launch condition as its setting, and the Frye twins work Victorian London. Leaping from a cathedral spire into a hay cart, a manoeuvre fans named the Leap of Faith long before the marketing did, remained constant across all of them.

Origins reset the mechanics in 2017 with levels, loot and gear rarity, following Bayek of Siwa through a Ptolemaic Egypt containing Cleopatra and Julius Caesar. Odyssey went further back to the Peloponnesian War, and Valhalla landed a Norse raiding party in ninth-century England. Origins also introduced Discovery Tour, a combat-free walkthrough mode that schools and museums have used directly.

Questions here cover the settings and their real historical figures, the Assassin and Templar conflict, the Animus framing, the recurring mechanics, and the studio behind all of it. The answer key appears under the quiz as soon as the last question is in.
